Our History

The story of Campion College begins with a vision of educational excellence rooted in Jesuit tradition. On January 5, 1960, the school opened its doors with humble beginnings - just 105 first-form students and four dedicated Jesuit Fathers who conducted the first lessons in a borrowed pavilion and classrooms from Campion Hall Preparatory School. This marked the continuation of a legacy that had begun twenty years earlier when Campion Hall Prep was founded in January 1940 under Rt. Reverend Thomas A. Emmet, S.J., D.D., and V. Reverend Thomas J. Feeney, S.J.

The early years were marked by growth and adaptation. Campion Hall Preparatory School had initially begun on the premises of St. George's College before moving to Roslyn Hall at 115 Old Hope Road on January 6, 1942. As Campion College's needs expanded, the preparatory school graduated its final class in December 1962, having served its purpose of nurturing young minds for over two decades.

The transformation of Campion College from its modest beginnings to Jamaica's premier secondary institution represents a remarkable journey of educational evolution. In 1967, the school expanded its academic offerings with the addition of a sixth form programme, providing students with advanced level education. Perhaps the most significant milestone came in 1976 when Campion transitioned from a private institution to a grant-aided, coeducational public school, opening its doors to a broader spectrum of Jamaican students while maintaining its commitment to excellence.

Over the past five decades, Campion College has established an extraordinary record of academic achievement that has garnered national and international recognition. The school has consistently earned awards as the Top CSEC & CAPE School based on examination results, while its graduates have received numerous prestigious accolades, including an impressive 14 Rhodes Scholarships. Today, with over 1,400 students, Campion continues to embody its Jesuit mission of creating 'men and women for others' through a comprehensive educational experience that includes over 40 clubs and 15 sports, alongside service organizations like Interact Club, Key Club, and Ministry Outreach programs that serve the wider community.

As Campion College looks toward the future, it remains steadfast in its commitment to forming graduates who are intellectually competent, open to growth, religious, loving, and committed to justice. The school's enduring legacy on Hope Road continues to shape the leaders of tomorrow, maintaining its position as a beacon of educational excellence in Jamaica and throughout the Caribbean region.
